The fact that women are afraid to walk alone triggers complex emotional and physical sensitivities born of the high rate of sexual assault in India. In response, a woven skin inspired by indigenous basketry covers the bamboo-arched structures that generate a semi-private space offering the security of public spaces and the comfort of privacy for women and families as they navigate modules interspersed throughout the loop. This socio-familiar learning process discreetly brings awareness of gender-equality issues to the community. Recreating an existing track, Retracing (S) Paces, a dynamic walkable structure is located on the North West coast of Kochi, Kerala.
The site is located in the north west side of the city of Kochi in Kerala India. It is located within a high pedestrian flow as a boardwalk extends from two blocks away connecting diverse uses from high density residential areas, temples, parks, to schools. The warm weather is stable throughout the year, providing perpetual greenery.
Concept Design Strategy
1.- Modules structures prototypes with different activities
2.- Raising ramps open spaces for education, weather protection and shelter
3.- Woven skin that wraps bamboo structure allowing for semi-private space
Using flexible wood strips to mok bamboo with the intention of exploring the material, its flexibility, adaptation and patterns through the weaving. In search of an adaptable prototype that could be repeated or adjusted to a site.
